John Calvin Henderson served in Company F Seventh Indiana Regiment, Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War, 1861-1865, Captain Thomas A. Jeffrey. He had been blind several years before his death. A few weeks before he died he broke his leg and died at the home of his daughter, Lula Belle (Henderson) Bowlby in Tipton County. His funeral was held in the Hopewell Church with burial in the Hopewell Cemetery. He had been very much interested in the Henderson family record and had prepared a short history of the family that was read at one of the family reunions and a copy of it is included in this book.

WILLIAM MORTON BOWLBY
( 07 Oct. 1866 - 29 Jul 1948 )
(William Morton Bowlby 11, William 10, Joseph 9, Thomas 8)
Funeral services for William Morton Bowlby, West End pioneer and beloved resident of Forks, were held Wednesday afternoon at the Congregational Church in Forks at 2pm. Rev. Robert Baldwin, Pastor at the Neah Bay Presbyterian Church, conducted the services. Musical selection were rendered by Mrs. Thomas Mansfield who was accompanied by Mrs. U S Ford at the piano.
William Morton Bowlby passed away in a Port Angeles Hospital Sunday evening following a lingering illness of several years and was at the time of his death 81 years, nine months and eighteen days old.
Born in Sharpsville, IN October 7, 1866, he attended school there and later went to college at Indianapolis.
December 28, 1892 he was married to Lula B Henderson at Whiteland, Indiana and to this union was born 3 children, 2 daughters and a son.
Mr. Bowlby first came to Port Angeles 50 years ago and shortly after that time came to Forks with Harvey Lesure. It was here that he took up a homestead and timber claim. In 1901 his wife and 2 children came west to Forks. The trip was made from Seattle to Clallam Bay via boat. From there the party continued in a covered wagon and after a hard day of travel over "punching" road spent the night at the half-way house near what is now Sappho. Bright and early the next morning the travelers continued on to Forks, reaching here in the evening. the family remained here and also lived at Quillayute, returning to the east in 1901. Mr. Bowlby returned to Forks in a short time to look after business interests.
It was in 1902 that Mr. Bowlby was appointed deputy county assessor and later deputy county treasurer.
In 1903 he again left for the east where he was employed until 1925 at various positions which included being a salesman in charge of a large area, a reporter on the Indianapolis News; court reporter at Indianapolis and a buyer for a livestock yard at St. Louis, IL.
Returning to Forks in 1925, he was employed on a number of different jobs. In the 30's he was appointed Justice of the Peace for the area surrounding Forks and it was from this position that he gained the name "Judge" by which he was always called until his death.
Judge Bowlby had a great love for the ocean and in the later 30's he and his partner built a cabin at Jackson Creek to which they retreated in 1937 "to get away from the world." They lived there for more than a year and then moved back to Forks. However, every summer until just recently the Judge spent a vacation at his cabin usually accompanied by one of his grandsons.
Judge Bowlby was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Presbyterian Church in Port Angeles.
Surviving relatives include his 2 daughters, Ruth H Spaulding of Sharpsville, IN and Lucy Phoebe Gehres of CA and his son Wm H Bowlby of Clallam Bay; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Notes for LUCY PHOEBE BOWLBY:
(Lucy Phoebe always prefered to be known as "Lucille")
Lucille's mom, Lulu, just happened to be on an indian reservation on the Olympic Peninsula in western Washington when Lucille was born. And almost immediately after her birth, she and her mother traveled by covered wagon around the Hood Canal and up to Seattle to catch a train back East where they would join Lulu's husband. Lucille had an excellent education and completed "finishing school" which was "higher" education in those days! And she was a most beautiful woman, judging by a photo taken when she was eighteen.
Deserted during the depression years by her husband, Lucille managed to successfully raise her 4 children. During WWII while her oldest son, Paul, was on a destroyer in the Pacific, she worked hard at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California. After the war, she held a sewing job at "Rough Ryder" in Napa, California.
The times and circumstances molded Lucille into a strong, dominant matriarchal (sp?) figure, and one not always easy to live with....but fiercely loyal to her family, she was always appreciated for her position and accomplishments. And she was greatly appreciated for her help in raising my brother and myself while living with my mom for many years in my youth. Best of all she was a Christian, a fact I only came to appreciate after her death when I found Christ rather late in life.

Notes for PAUL EDMOND (GEHRES) MYLES:
I guess everyone's got at least one black sheep in the family......and here's one now!
Paul was an eminently successful lawyer in California, but not a successful husband. He divorced his wife (my grandmother) to marry his secretary (name unknown). This new wife didn't live long. Later, for some reason, he embezzled $5,000 of a client's money during the depression and took off for parts unknown. He changed his surname to "MYLES". As luck would have it, "Myles" was drafted into WWII and served in Europe. He returned with an English War Bride who would subsequently give him 3 more sons. I believe it was during the 1950's that the authorities located him in Ohio, remarried with this new family and working as a service manager in a car dealership in Cincinnati, Ohio. Attempts to extradite him were not successful. Family records of his brother, Fay Gehres in Indiana, report that Paul made settlement and all charges were dropped.
I never knew him nor was he talked about much as I grew up. Understandable since he deserted his wife and 4 kids during the depression.

A daughter's memories from Roberta Faye Gehres Varney related Oct 5, 1997:
Paul joined the U.S. Army in Indiana upon our entry into World War I and served in France. While carrying messages on a motorcycle at night with his lights off in "no man's land" between the lines, he had a wreck. On another occasion during an enemy gas attack, his gas mask developed a leak and he suffered permanent lung damage as a result.
Also during his stay in France, he helped minister to a village heavily stricken by the worldwide flu epidemic occuring at that time. For his efforts, he was decorated by the French government.

Notes for PAUL EDMOND GEHRES, JR.:
Paul was one of 4 children raised by his mother during the depression years. During WWII, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served at the San Diego Naval Base.
He worked hard at Henry's Bar in Stockton, California to put himself through law school, but after completing everything........his decided not to take the bar exam, but to stay in the line of work he'd grown accustomed to at Henry's! He eventually bought his own tavern in San Francisco in the 1960's and named it, "The Oar House". It was a quaint, friendly little place, but alas, not a successful venture in the long run.
In my impoverished childhood, Paul provided a carbonated oasis for me. In those days a kid could sit in a bar, and it was a real treat to be able to visit him at his workplace where I would sit and drink glasses of free coke and 7-up as fast as he could dispense it! Paul had been married 3 times, but was single at his passing and left no children.
